Hand Candy: The Evolution of Nail Art

August 2, 2018

There was a fun article in the New York Times today detailing how nail art has evolved from the random burst of glitter to a full out hand design. The accompanying images were fantastic and ranged from a pop art looking clear nails with gold embellishments on both nails and hands, to a fully bedazzled mitt.

Is the notion of hand art new? Not really, since Mehndi — intricate henna art on hands and body– has been created for thousands of years particularly in ancient India and Egypt and is still part of traditional life and celebrations.

Is it practical? Not particularly, and I expect that if anyone tries this in real life they’ll be picking crystals out of their hair or pockets for weeks.

Matching or coordinating hand and nail art is fun and pretty though, and great for a special occasion (though not a serious special occasion – think Sweet Sixteen but not your wedding), and ever so  Instagram friendly.
